Frequently asked questions

Yes — completely free to use. There's nothing to buy from us and no subscription. When you choose to buy a book, that purchase happens on a third-party shop (like Amazon or Waterstones), on their terms.

No — you can use everything without one, and start searching straight away. An account is optional. If you create one (free, by email "magic link" — no password), your wish list and literary passport sync across all your devices, so you never lose your stamps. Without an account, everything is saved on your device instead.

It depends whether you sign in. Without an account, your wish list, passport stamps and region setting are saved only in your browser on that device — nothing goes to a server. If you sign in, that same data is stored securely via Supabase (our database provider, in the UK/EU) so it syncs across your devices. Either way it's only your reading data and your email — never sold. You can delete your account and its data at any time from the app's settings. See our Privacy Policy.

We don't sell anything about you. If you don't sign in, we don't collect personal data at all; if you create an account, we store only your email and your saved library (via Supabase) so it can sync — never for advertising. We offer optional Google Analytics, which only runs if you accept the cookie banner — decline and no analytics cookies are set. A few other third parties help the site work: book searches go to the Open Library, and Buy links take you to retailers. See our Privacy Policy for the detail.

Live barcode scanning uses a browser feature that works on Chrome and Edge and on Android, but not on iPhone/Safari or Firefox. On those, use the manual entry in the scan window — it works everywhere.

No. Location is only read the moment you tap Locate me, and only to find destinations near you. It isn't stored or sent to us, and nothing runs in the background.

Your saved lists, passport, and the hand-picked books work offline. The live 'more books' search, barcode lookups, and cover images need an internet connection.

Open the app in your phone browser, then use the browser menu: on iPhone, Share ▸ Add to Home Screen; on Android Chrome, ⋮ ▸ Add to Home screen.

The curated picks and their notes are written by us. The larger 'more books set in…' lists come live from the Open Library, a free community catalog, and are reader-tagged rather than hand-checked.

The Community shelf is shared: reviews are public, so everyone using Pangolin Pages can read them on any device. Anyone can read them, but you need to be signed in to post one (this keeps reviews accountable and cuts spam). You can delete your own reviews at any time. Please don't include anything private.
